𝘜𝘯𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦. 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘜𝘯𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦. 𝘉𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩. 𝘈𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.⁣

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.⁣
⁣
For years, that was my response. The phrase I learnt as a child pushed back to names that put holes in my character.⁣
⁣
Whether it was friends who told me I always have to be right, or jobs where my staff felt intimidated or my peers felt like they couldn’t read me - these words have remained constant in my life.⁣
⁣
The wellness industry taught me to look deeply at 1) why these words affect me and 2) why they keep showing up. That there is something to learn or change about myself - everything is a reflection - that we need to try harder, work to become better every day.⁣
⁣
And I did that - for years. Every bad comment or poor reflection I sat with it (stewed over it) trying to understand why some people see that and others don’t - how I can be better, how I can essentially make everyone like me.⁣
⁣
I don’t believe that anymore. ⁣
⁣
While the intention in the wellness industry of many practices is always to improve ourselves and strive to be a better human sometimes these practices miss the mark - because what if it’s more about embracing some of these qualities and letting go of the connotation of what we perceive these word to mean.⁣
⁣
Here’s how I see it:⁣
⁣
Unapproachable / Unreadable = I’m reserved by nature, I’m not one who shows big emotions - I don’t get squealing excited or red hot angry, I tend to be straight down the middle 99.9% of the time. Perhaps it’s the Libra in me and the balance I strive to create.⁣
⁣
Intimidating / Bitch / Always Right = I’m opinionated and I think you should be too. I don’t think I’m always right but I’m not afraid to say what I think and what I feel. I’m always open to a conversation of why I should think differently. Talk with me, teach me, make me see another point of view.⁣
⁣
I’ve tried for years to make myself less of all of these. In a society where women often feel less than, I’m no longer willing to do that. ⁣
⁣
So pull up a seat, let’s have a talk and get to know who you see beyond your perception. You might be surprised.⁣
